1999-P Connecticut Statehood Quarter
Struck on an Experimental Planchet
MS62 PCGS
Sold For: $7,015.00

In 1999, the U.S. Mint tested manganese alloy planchets for the new "golden" Sacagawea dollar before dies for that design were available. Instead, 1999-P state quarter dies, which had a similar diameter, were used to strike a limited number of experimental planchet pieces. Specimens are known for all five 1999 state designs (Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut), and each is very rare. This is a caramel-gold representative with hints of silver-blue toning. A lengthy, narrow line crosses Washington's bust truncation and is possibly as made, on the planchet prior to the strike. The lower portion of the Connecticut side shows incompleteness of strike.

1921 Morgan Dollar, 10% Off Center
Brilliant, Lustrous MS64

Sold For: $5,002.00

Morgan dollars are rarely seen with any type of Mint error, most of which are limited to off center strikings. This is one of the more obvious ones showing about a 10% shift. The date and and almost all the design elements are present except the denticles. A significant arc of blank planchet is apparent on the upper-left obverse and lower-left reverse. The surfaces are otherwise brilliant and the strike is strongly brought up. Near-Gem surfaces are minimally marked. Housed in an NGC holder hand-signed by longtime Guide Book editor Kenneth Bressett.

1976 Bicentennial Quarter
Two-Coin Mated Pair
Brilliant Uncirculated NGC

Sold For: $4,880.00

The obverse of the quarter is fully struck. The reverse design is mostly struck on a smaller (possibly dime) planchet that was nearly centered on the reverse of the quarter when struck. The smaller piece shows some strike softness and blue-green toning, with blushes of gold and rose.

1979-S Susan B. Anthony Dollar
Double Denomination On a Struck Cent
MS64 Red and Brown PCGS

Sold For: $3,904.00

Although cents struck on dimes are encountered from time to time, other double denomination mint errors are challenging to find, especially combining obsolete types. This impressive Choice example in Red and Brown has a complete mintmark and motto from the Susan B. Anthony 1979-S dollar, and the obverse includes the upper half of the date and lower half of LIBERTY. The portrait retains elements of the façade of the Lincoln Memorial from the reverse of the cent, and the reverse is almost complete and only lacks the bottom of the denomination letters. Fire-orange mint luster is splashed with deep hues of plum and caramel for a unique and entertaining visual presentation.
