Triple Struck $3 Sells for $41,400 in Superior Auction

Mike Byers of Byers Numismatic Corp. purchased an extremely rare major mint error from the recent Superior Galleries Auction in September. It is a Triple Struck 1887 $3 Gold Piece NGC Proof 64.

Mike Byers paid $41,400 and immediately placed it in a major collection of United States Gold mint errors.

This is an exciting and major mint error since all gold errors and all proof errors are extremely rare. Combining these two factors is virtually unheard of.

Here is the description from the Superior Auction Catalog:

$3 Gold 1887 Triple Strike NGC BP64 Lot #2925
1887 Three-Dollar Gold. Triple-Struck. Rotated in Collar. NGC graded Proof 64. Cameo.

Warm deep golden color features smooth, glistening mirrors with compensating richly frosted devices on either side. A magnificent specimen in this Proof 64 category, made even more intriguing by the surface. This great rarity was struck first, then became rotated in the collar before additional strikes were made -- three in all -- with the evidence of earlier strike plainly evident in the fields on either side!
