One of the rarest of all forms of clips is the Incomplete Clip, also characterized as an Incomplete Punch. It depicts an area of the coin where the blanking die failed to fully penetrate the metal coin strip.

The criteria to ascertain a genuine incomplete clip require both faces of the coin show a half-Moon shaped scar. (This is created by the blanking die and the failure of the coin metal sheet to advance properly). Equally important are that the punching scar be distinctively sharp, narrow and observable to the edge of the coin.

Our featured error coin is a 1966 George Washington Quarter certified and graded by PCGS AU55. Having just one incomplete clip present on a coin is rare. A coin having two incomplete punches is nearly unheard of. In addition, this coin is punctuated with a pair of curved clips!

On the obverse, the second, fainter incomplete clip extends adjacent the letter Y of LIBERTY to the second numeral 6 of 1966. On the reverse, it arcs from the letter F of OF to the letter R of QUARTER. Several amazing happenstances created an incredibly unique error coin!
