Off-Metals Struck At The San Francisco Mint

A very small group of PROOF and mint state errors recently came from a collection that was auctioned by the State of California. The U.S. Secret Service inspected and released this collection to the State of California determining that it was legal to own. The State of California then auctioned the collection and it has been dispersed since the sale.

Included in this collection was a batch of mint state off-metals struck in the San Fransisco Mint from 1965 through 1970. Several of these dates are extremely rare. The 1965 and 1966 Cents are struck on clad Dime blanks which were intended for the striking of the Special Mint Sets. The 1968-S Cent are struck on clad Dime blanks which were intended for the striking of Proof coins. The 1968-S and 1970-S Nickels struck on Cent blanks are extremely rare.
