Editor’s Note: From the Heritage Galleries 2005 June Long Beach Signature Auction Listing
In searching our archives for broadstruck gold coins, the only listing we could find was for a 1906-D Double Eagle sold back in 2003. Needless to say, such errors are highly unusual for anything struck in gold. What makes this spectacular offering even more intriguing is that only 5,000 business strikes were produced in 1886, so the odds of an error slipping through are only more miniscule. This out-of-collar striking is shifted toward 8 o’clock and displays vibrant luster.
