I have a special love of the modern 2005 Bison Nickel error coins. There was huge collector interest when the 2005 Bison Nickel first came out. As an error coin dealer and collector I really wanted to find errors on the Bison Nickel so I started buying rolls and bags of that design. I saw a very cool large retained die crack on eBay and back searched where the seller may have gotten them from. I found that the seller had bought a box of unsearched Bison Nickels from a certain seller. I then bought many boxes from that same seller and did in fact find the multiples of the same very photographic error. I also found another Bison error and had an article published in Coin World about my find, the "Two Horned Bison". I sold thousands of minor bison error coins and put all the proceeds into buying only major error coins that would be put into my business inventory.
Fast forward to today. I never roll search anymore nor do I sell raw minor error coins. What I do find fascinating is when I come across a major error on a bison nickel. These are extremely rare. Some of the known major errors on the Bison Nickels are an off center, a rotated die, improperly annealed planchets, and clipped planchets. The various clipped planchets on the Bison Nickel include curved, straight edge, and double curved clips. There is also a sought after repeatable variety called the "Speared Bison" which is a long die gouge. Be on the lookout to add a rare and popular Bison Nickel major error coin to your collection.
