1943 Lincoln Cent Struck on a Cuba One Centavo Planchet
This Lincoln cent was struck on a Cuba 1 Centavo brass planchet (2.3gm). At the 2006 Denver ANA B&M Auction, a 1943 Cent on Surinam/Curacao 25 Centavo planchet ANACS Net F 12, VF Details damage (Lot #377), brought $16,675. In the auction listing, Bowers & Merena described this off-metal as “perhaps the most interesting coin in the entire sale, and it is rarer than the coveted 1943 Copper Cent... A historically significant and almost certainly unique error, this 1943 ‘Curacao’ Cent is sure to draw considerable bidder attention due to its association with the famous 1943 Copper Cents.”
This 1943 Lincoln cent off-metal struck on a Cuba blank is unique. To my knowledge, there are only four known 1943 dated Lincoln cent off-metals struck on planchets intended for foreign countries.
