This is a unique and spectacular major mint error sealed in the original United States Mint Proof Set! In my 50 years of being a professional numismatist specializing in mint errors, I have never seen another proof major mint error in the government sealed plastic holder.

Struck in 2004 at the San Francisco Mint, this clad proof Roosevelt dime has a 25% obverse indent from a planchet. On its own, it is considered an extremely rare proof error. Considering the high quality control when striking and packaging United States Mint Proof Sets, it is amazing that this mint error was not rejected and somehow was included in the sealed proof set.

It was purchased by a dealer at the 2026 ANA in Pittsburgh. He contacted me since I specialize in major mint errors and have handled an extensive amount of proof errors as well. Based on my decades of experience, I knew that this was a unique and special numismatic rarity and I immediately purchased it.

United States Mint Proof Sets have been issued in government sealed plastic holders since 1968. I discussed this proof error in the sealed holder with several mint error specialists and no one had ever heard of another one. I also researched auction records and found nothing.
